Philosophyis simply the basic set of ideas, beliefs, and values that you live by. It’s your outlook,or the filter through which you view life. Every piece of information that comesto you and every situation you face are filtered through your philosophy. In asense, your philosophy predetermines your response to the things happeningaround you and the results you see in life. Yet many people are unaware of theirphilosophies. They have never combined their separate beliefs into a single valuesystem through which they view the world and interpret life.Philosophy is the reason identical situations canproduce completely different responses in differentpeople. Your philosophy filters every experienceyou have and every piece of information that comesyour way. The Apostle Paul emphasized this truth tothe Colossians when he warned them to be on thelookout for anyone who would “spoil” them throughphilosophy. A wrong philosophy causes wrongresponses to circumstances, and it can cause you todraw wrong conclusions about events and informationin life. Christians need a philosophy that is modeledPessimism and optimism are two simple examplesof opposite philosophies. Pessimists look toward thefuture and expect the worst, while optimists hope forthe best. You could sit a pessimist and an optimist sideby side, expose them to identical circumstances, andthe optimist would find some positive way to spin whathas happened, while the pessimist would focus on thenegative. The optimist would look for some opportunityto take advantage of the situation, and the pessimistwould focus on the negative and be more likely to getdepressed and discouraged.Fall & Winter 20125
