BASF erecting another world-scale

SymClariol is multifunctional
Symrise has unveiled a multi-
functional active ingredient called
SymClariol from its 1,2-alkanediols
line. The product serves as a hair
conditioner and as a moisturizing
agent for topical preparations.
BASF is erecting a new world-scale
plant for its Trilon M complexing
agent at its Ludwigshafen site in
Germany as sales for the sustainable
product continue to grow.
Construction has already begun and
once the plant is completed in 2010,
the company will have global capacity
of 120,000 tonnes/y over its entire
complexing agents range. BASF says
the methylglycinediacetic acid
marketed as Trilon M is the most
efficient and eco-friendly chelating
agent in the aminocarboxylates class.
It is easily biodegradable and is used
in detergents and cleaners and in
industrial and general-purpose
cleaners to improve their cleaning
properties. It also has applications in
cosmetics. Trilon M offers a good
price/performance ratio and has
therefore established itself as a
replacement for phosphates in
modern, high-performance, eco-
friendly dishwasher detergents, BASF
says. Available worldwide in liquid
and various solid forms, Trilon M’s
sustainability has been corroborated
by an eco-efficiency study certified by
the German Technical Control Board
(TÜV). Hazard labelling is
unnecessary.

Barclays looks to clean up with £300
M Swarfega sale
HAPPI, Household & Personal Products Industry, Aug
2008, 45 (8), 116-117
The firm that invented Swarfega, the
heavy-duty green handwash used by
car mechanics, is to be put up for sale
with a price tag of £300 M. Barclays
Private Equity has hired the
investment bank UBS to organize the
sale of Deb, which it bought with the
management for £135 M in Mar 2004.
An information memorandum is
currently being produced. An industry
source said that a mixture of trade
buyers and private equity would be
interested. He added: “This is a high-
quality business that will attract
private equity businesses such as
Bridgepoint, Cognetas, Hg Capital
and Montagu.” However, a second
source said that a sale could be
difficult as the Derbyshire-based
company could be worth closer to
£200 M. Although best known for
Swarfega, which Deb invented more
than a half a century ago, the company
produces a range of skincare
products. Its Cutan brand, for
example, is one of the UK’s leading
hand hygiene products for hospitals.
Laviosa establishes Turkish bentonite
arm
Laviosa Chimica Mineraria SpA, an
Italian producer of bentonite, intends
to set up a 50,000 tonne/y dried
granulated facility in Fatsa, Turkey.
The facility, planned to start
operations in late 2008, will process
locally mined white bentonite for cat
litter, detergent and paper
applications. Laviosa operates three
plants in Italy, and has a minority
stake in Laviosa Promasa in Spain.
The company manufactures 230,000
tonnes/y of bentonite.
