Rhodia introduces sustainable
solutions for eco-friendly personal
care formulations
Clariant sets new benchmarks in
aesthetic performance for mild and
natural personal care products
Ashland to increase prices for
phosphate ester surfactants
Ashland Aqualon Functional
Ingredients, a commercial unit of
Ashland Inc, will increase the price of
all Strodex phosphate ester surfactant
products by 5-8% in North America
effective 1 May 2010, or as contracts
allow. This action is driven by
escalating raw material prices.
Rhodia is introducing a range of
products particularly suitable for
designing eco-friendly hair and skin
care formulations, meeting consumer
expectations for natural and
sustainable products. The Group has
evaluated the sustainability profile of
its Personal Care product ranges
using several criteria: vegetable and
renewable carbon content, bio-
degradability and impact on the
environment, exclusion of ingredients
(free of dioxane, parabens,
formaldehyde, EDTA, sulfate, and
preservatives), and compliance with
eco-labels (ingredients suitable for
Ecocert, Natural Product Association
and Whole Foods formulations).
Without compromising performance,
Rhodia’s solutions - based on anionic,
amphoteric and performance
concentrate surfactants and natural
polymers - enable formulators to
leverage sustainability claims in
multiple cleansing and conditioning
products. The launch of Rhodapex
ESB-70 NAT, a unique petrochemical-
free SLES surfactant approved by
Ecocert, illustrates Rhodia’s
commitment to provide formulators
with sustainable solutions. The new
product is said to be ideal for
formulating natural and high-
performance shampoo, body wash,
liquid hand soap and detergents.
For the hair care segment, Rhodia
has extended its offering with the
introduction of Mackine 301, a
vegetable-based, non-quaternized
amidoamine surfactant. This product
is said to be ideal for the creation of
hair conditioners and masks for both
damaged and healthy hair. Rhodia
says it offers an excellent alternative
to conventional cetrimonium chloride
(CTAC), providing good conditioning
properties, excellent viscosity building
and easy-to-process solutions for
formulators. For consumers, Mackine
301 repairs damaged hair, provides
detangling benefits and minimizes the
build-up effect upon multiple uses
because it is easy to rinse, leaving
hair healthy and shiny.
Captivating optics, sensual touch
effects and a fresher, cleaner skin
and hair feel are among the
advanced sensory and performance
benefits now available to the
cosmetics and toiletries industry with
the launch of three new innovative
formulation ingredients by Clariant.
These latest developments provide
natural and function-boosting
ingredients for personal care
formulations, the company says.
Unveiled at in-cosmetics 2010, the
new products are: Hostapon SG, a
novel amino acid surfactant for
sulfate-free rinse-off products such as
shampoos, body soaps, facial
cleansers and shaving preparations;
SilCare Silicone WSI, a water-in-
oil/water-in-silicone emulsifier for
body lotions and creams, sunscreen
formulations and decorative
cosmetics; and Aristoflex TAC, a
thickener and suspending agent for
pearls, bubbles and particles within
liquid soaps, shampoos and anti-
dandruff shampoos, facial cleansers
and shower gels.

Evonik announces price increase
Evonik Industries’ household care
business line has increased the
prices for all products marketed in
Europe in the range of 10%, effective
1 Apr 2010 or as contract terms allow.
These price increases are primarily
being driven by increased costs for
major raw materials used in the
production of the cleaning and
softening products, including
quaternaries, speciality surfactants,
organo-modified silicones and
performance additives.

brings together Huntsman’s novel
isethionate surfactant technology and
Innospec’s global sales and
applications expertise in the personal
care market. Under an exclusive
agreement, Innospec and Huntsman
will cooperate to continue developing
and to commercialize Innospec’s new,
innovative mild surfactant: Iselux

Huntsman will focus on manufacturing
the isethionate ester surfactant’s key
raw material, and Innospec will

Chelating-agent market shifting to
biodegradable products
Japanese and western companies

ChemteX, BASF SE and AkzoNobel
are ramping up production of
biodegradable chelating agents to
replace non-biodegradable organic
compounds such as ethylenedia-
minetetraacetate (EDTA) and
nitrilotriacetate. Chelating agents are
used to separate metal ions in aqueous
solutions for various applications such
as household and industrial detergents,
pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. Laws
regarding the use of organic
compounds in many regions have
become stricter as they have been
found to pose risks to health and the
environment. Safer alternative
