FOCUS
ON SURFACTANTS
surfactants market. The personal and
household care segments, in
particular, will be key end users
chiefly due to the greater purchasing
power of the middle class, who are
spending more on fast-moving
consumer goods. New analysis from
Frost & Sullivan Analysis of the
Brazilian and Argentinian Surfactants
Market finds that the market earned
revenues of $1.44 bn in 2012 and
estimates this to reach $1.96 bn in
2018. The study covers amphoteric,
anionic, cationic and nonionic
surfactants. Anionic surfactants
account for nearly 50% of the total
Brazilian and Argentinian market as
they are heavily utilized in the
personal and household care
segments. But the category
cationic surfactants will expand
the fastest.
Despite this increase in
consumption, higher surfactant prices
tied to the rise in petroleum,
production and labour costs are
reducing the margins of domestic
manufacturers. The need to compete
with low-priced Asian products further
strains profits. Moreover,
consolidation in the customer base
has decreased business opportunities
in Brazil. This has enhanced
customer negotiation power, which
along with retailer consolidation,
curbs revenues. Developing
multifunctional products will widen
application scope and be a crucial
step to overcome these challenges.
The multifunctionality of final
products, which are able to solubilize,
hold ingredients together, and
improve product stability, will spur
sale volumes. Environmental
concerns among customers in Brazil
and Argentina will lead to the creation
of natural, renewable-based products.
Emphasis on green surfactants
manufacturing is especially vital as
raw material prices from petroleum
derivatives escalate. Responding to
this trend, manufacturers are
eliminating alkylphenol ethoxylates
and nonylphenol ethoxylates from
their formulations and replacing them
with natural, renewable, oleo-based
products such as methyl ester
sulfates from soy, palm oil, or seed
oil-based alcohol ethoxylates.
skin protection, hair styling, and body
washes. For preservatives, Shulke &
Mayr has Sensiva PA 30, which is a
synergistic blend combining the
antimicrobial activity of phenethyl
alcohol and undecyl alcohol with
propanediol. Lexgard Natural from
Inolex is designed for preservative-
free and self-preserving cosmetics.
Dermosoft 1388 Eco, a natural
preservative suitable for oral care is
released by Dr Straetmans. For skin
protection, Solabia has Niniderm,
which has strong antioxidant
properties due to its polyphenol
ingredient. Uvaxine from Induchem
offers skin protection from UV
radiation. Based on its lipid-eco-
extraction patented green technology,
Oleoactifs from Oleos reduces
cellular oxidative stress. Companies
also have cosmetic bases that can
become completed products using
little energy, as part of their
contribution to green processing. Alfa
Chemicals has Sucrabase, which is a
line of oily gel bases and is based on
the company’s Sucragel cold process
emulsifiers. Dr Straetmans’ natural
emulsifier Dermofeel Easymuls is
designed for lotions, milks and
sprayable formulations. DUB Base
Expert+ from Stearinerie Dubois is a
self-emulsifying base used to produce
o/w emulsions, which can give a silky
and non-greasy application. For hair
treatments, BASF Care Creations
offers Plantaquat NC, which aims to
replace quaternary ammonium salts
and silicone compounds in hair
conditioners. N-Hance SP-100 and N-
Hance 4572 from Ashland
Laboratories are conditioning
polymers used at very low levels to
improve the deposition of natural oils
on the hair. Amaze XT, a
multifunctional styling polymer, is from
AkzoNobel.

Essential oils & natural extracts to
show fastest growth in US fragrance
market: Freedonia
The US market for flavours and
fragrances is forecast to advance
4.6%/y to $7.1 bn in 2017. Flavour
blends, the largest segment, are
expected to achieve healthy gains
during this period. Essential oils and
natural extracts, a smaller segment,
are expected to post the fastest
growth. Additionally, trends towards
more complex and exotic flavours and
scents will boost demand for new
flavour and fragrance blends. These
and other trends are presented in a
new study from The Freedonia Group,
Inc. Healthy gains in the large
cosmetic and toiletry market, bolstered
by use in body washes and perfume
and cologne, will spur growth in
fragrance blends. Growth will also be
supported by above-average
advances in the smaller cleaning
products segment, due to strength in
dishwashing detergents and other
cleaners, as well as laundry
detergents. More moderate growth in
environmental fragrance goods will act
as a restraint on even faster increases
as a result of weakness in candles.
Going forward, demand growth in oils
and extracts for flavour and fragrance
applications will outpace that in flavour
and fragrance blends, although from a
smaller base. Demand growth in
aroma chemicals for use in the flavour
and fragrance industry has lagged that
of other products and will continue to
do so. However, advances in natural
aroma chemicals will remain above
average through 2017.
