PARKING BRAKE SYSTEM (S30–60E, S40–50F)4The clearance between the brake shoes and the brakedrum is adjusted automatically. The adjuster linkageturns the adjuster wheel to adjust the clearance. Theprimary shoe and the adjuster links move with the drumduring a stop when the lift truck is moving in reverse.The linkage permits the adjuster lever to rotate theadjuster screw wheel. The adjuster screw wheel canonly turn when there is clearance between the lining andthe brake drum. The adjuster screw wheel can also beturned manually. A hole in the drum is used to get accessto the adjuster screw wheel.REPAIRS2. Start the engine and tilt the mast fully backward. Putblocks under the outer mast channels. Tilt the mastforward on the truck frame.3. Put some grease on the floor under the wheel. Tilt themast backward until the wheels just touch the floor.WARNINGBrake linings contain asbestos or other fibers.Breathing the dust from these linings is a cancer orlung disease hazard. Do not create dust! Do not cleanbrake parts with compressed air or by brushing. Usevacuum equipment for asbestos or follow thecleaning procedure in this section. When the brakedrums are removed, do not create dust.Do not sand, grind, chisel, hammer or change liningsin any way that will create dust. Any changes tolinings must be done in a restricted area with specialventilation. Protective clothing and a respiratormust be used.172CLEANING PROCEDURES1. Do not release brake lining dust from the brakelinings into the air when the brake drum is removed.2. Use a solvent approved for cleaning of brake partsto wet the brake lining dust. Follow the instructionsand cautions of the manufacturer for the use of thesolvent. If a solvent spray is used, spray at a distanceso that the dust is not released into the air.3. When the brake lining dust is wet, clean the parts.Put any rags or towels in a plastic bag or an airtightcontainer while they are still wet. Put a“DANGEROUS FIBERS” warning label on theplastic bag or airtight container.4.
