A single piston seal is in the cen-ter of the rod. Oil pressure on one side of the pistonmoves the piston in the bore. The piston pushes an equalamount of oil from the opposite side of the cylinder.A relief valve in the steering system controls the oilpressure when the piston reaches the end of the cylinder. The tie rods that connect the spindle arms to the cylinderrod are not adjustable.DESCRIPTION (See FIGURE 1.)The steering axle assembly includes an axle frame, asteering cylinder, and two spindle and hub assemblies. The axle assembly is connected to the lift truck framewith two stub shafts. The stub shafts permit the axle as-H7.00–12.50H (H150–275H),H13.50–16.00B (H300–350B),P7.00–9.00B (P150–200B) SHOWN,OTHERS SIMILAR1 23H360–620B,H700–800A,H16.00–30.00C (H360–650C),H17.00–32.00C (H370–700C),H36.00–48.00C (H700–1050C)H20.00–32.00F (H440–700F/FS)6H7.00–12.50H(H150–275H),H13.50–16.00B(H300–350B),P7.00–9.00B(P150–200B)5467435648291. Make sure that the lifting devices usedduring the repairs can lift the weight. Make sure thelift truck is in a position of stability before making re-pairs.The following examples are given to help you make anestimate of the weight that will be lifted.REPAIRSSTEERING AXLEWARNINGPut the lift truck on blocks. Follow the proceduresfor raising the lift truck in the OPERATING MAN-UAL or Periodic Maintenance section for this lifttruck. The surface must be solid, even, and level.Make sure that any blocks used to support the lifttruck are solid, one piece units. Make sure the liftingdevices used during repairs can lift the weight of theparts.RemovalWhen removing the axle, disconnect the hydraulic linesand install caps on the cylinder fittings. The caps willprevent the cylinder rod from moving as the axle is re-moved from under the lift truck. Put a lifting device un-der the axle. Remove the caps holding the stub shafts tothe frame. Lower the axle from the frame and move theaxle from the lift truck.InstallationWhen installing the axle, make sure the spacer, shimsand bushing are in the correct position. Lubricate thebushings and stub shafts with multi–purpose grease.Raise the axle into the frame mounts. Install the stubshaft caps. Check the clearance between the shims and2the mounts. Add or subtract shims as necessary to getzero clearance. Tighten the capscrews holding the capsto the frame.OnH7.00–12.50H (H150–275H), H13.50–16.00B(H300–350B), P7.00–9.00B (P150–200B) units, tighten the capscrews to 380 Nm (280 lbf ft).OnH360–620B, H700–800A,(H700–920B),H17.00–48.00CH20.00–32.00F(H440–700F/FS)H36.00–44.00B(H360–1050C),units,tightencapscrews to 660 Nm (485 lbf ft).STEERING CYLINDER (See FIGURE 2.)RemovalThe steering cylinder can be removed with the axle inthe lift truck. Disconnect the hydraulic lines and putcaps on the fittings. Disconnect the tie rods at the cylin-der rod ends. For models H360–620B, H700–800A, putblocks under the cylinder so that the cylinder does notfall when the capscrews are removed. Remove thecapscrews that hold the cylinder to the axle frame. Re-move the cylinder from the lift truck.NOTE:Early trucks had cylinders mounted to the top ofthe axle. Others mount either to the front or bottom ofthe axle. Blocks are not required under the cylinder.1269633H7.00–12.50H (H150–275H)H13.50–16.00B (H300–350B),P7.00–8.00B (P150–200B) SHOWNH360–620B, H16.00–30.00C (H360–650C)H36.00–44.00B (H700–920B) SHOWN9101187641.2.3.4.5.5END PLUGROD WIPERSQUARE RING SEALPISTON SEALROD SEAL5431210961121.2.3.4.END PLUGROD WIPERROD SEALROD5.6.7.8.RETAINERPISTONPISTON SEALO–RING9.10.11.12.PISTON RINGO–RINGBACK–UP RINGSET SCREWH17.00–32.00C (H370–700C) SHOWNH36.00–48.00C (H800–1050C)4321567 38 10219109611.
