Information for the differential, andring and pinion gears is in sectionPOWERSHIFTTRANSMISSION, 1300 SRM 543.housing can move a small amount in the axle mounts. The outer ends of the axle housing are the mounts for thewheel bearings. The wheel bearings are tapered–rollerbearings with the cups pressed into the hub/brake drum. The nut on the end of the spindle holds and adjusts thewheel bearings. The axle shafts are fastened to the hubsby capscrews. The back plate and brake assembly arefastened to the axle housing. The axle housing is also themounting for the mast. The outer wheel bearing is lubricated with gear oil fromthe differential housing. The inner wheel bearing is lu-bricated with wheel bearing grease.DESCRIPTION (See FIGURE 1.)The drive axle is mounted directly to the frame and isheld in place by two caps. These caps are fastened to theframe of the lift truck by capscrews. PARTS OF THE DRIVE AXLE1REPAIRSREMOVAL AND DISASSEMBLY(See FIGURE 1.)7. Disconnect the brake lines to the wheel cylinders.Disconnect the parking brake cables at the parkingbrake lever. Loosen the cable clamps for the parkingbrake cables.8. Put blocks under the transmission housing. Theblocks must reach from the floor to the bottom of thetransmission; this will prevent any movement of thetransmission after the mounting caps are removed.WARNINGWhen putting the lift truck on blocks, make sure thesurface is solid, even, and level. Any blocks used tosupport the lift truck must be solid and one–piece.1. Put blocks on each side (front and back) of the steer-ing tires to prevent movement of the lift truck.2. Raise the lift truck and put blocks under the frame sothat the drive wheels just touch the floor. Put blocks un-der the counterweight for stability.3. Remove the mast assembly as described in the sectionfor theMAST, 4000 SRM 521.4. Drain the oil from the differential.WARNINGThe axle housing is heavy. A lifting device must beused to move the axle housing9. Support the center of the axle housing with a trans-mission–type jack that has a minimum capacity of 115kg (250 lb); the jack must have four wheels and a flatplatform that will properly support the axle housing.Remove the capscrews that hold the axle housing to thetransmission housing. Remove the capscrews that holdthe mounting caps to the frame.10. Separate the axle housing from the transmission.Pull the axle housing out from the truck.11. Disassemble the brake assembly as described inTHE BRAKE SYSTEM, 1800 SRM 540.Remove theback plate from the mounts for the axle housing.WARNINGOn the H1.50–1.75XM, H2.00XMS (H25–35XM,H40XMS), completely remove the air from the tiresbefore removing them from the lift truck. Air pres-sure in the tires can cause the tire and rim parts toexplode which can cause serious injury or death. On the H1.50–1.75XM, H2.00XMS (H25–35XM,H40XMS), never loosen the nuts that hold togetherthe inner and outer wheel–halves when there is airpressure in the tire.5. Remove the wheels. Remove the capscrews that holdthe axle shafts to the brake drums. Remove the axleshafts.6. Bend the lockplate and remove the nut from thespindle. Remove the washer and bearing cone. Slide thehub/brake drum from the spindle. If the assembly cannot be removed easily, loosen the brake shoes. Put ascrewdriver through the hole in the back plate to turn theadjuster wheel and loosen the brake shoes. Pull theactuator away from the adjuster wheel while the adjusterwheel is turned up.CLEANING AND INSPECTIONWARNINGCleaning solvents can be flammable and toxic, andcan cause skin irritation. When using cleaning sol-vents, always follow the solvent manufacturer’ssafety precautions.Clean all the parts of the drive axle with solvent.Inspect the bearings and seals for damage. The spindlesmust turn freely in the mounts. The splines for the axleshafts must not be damaged.2ASSEMBLY AND INSTALLATION(See FIGURE 1.)1. Attach the back plate to the axle housing. Apply Loc-tite to the mounting studs and tighten the nuts to 102N.m (75 lbfft). Assemble the brake assembly onto theback plate as described in the sectionTHE BRAKESYSTEM, 1800 SRM 540.7. Adjust the clearance of the brake shoes as described inthe section forTHE BRAKE SYSTEM, 1800 SRM540.8. Install the wheels. On the H1.50–1.75XM,H2.00XMS (H25–35XM, H40XMS), tighten the nutsfor the wheels to 204 to 225 N.m (151 to 166 lbfft). Onthe S25–35XM, S40XMS, tighten the capscrews for thewheels to 129 N.m (95 lbfft).9. Put sealant on the flange of the axle shaft. Install theaxle shafts and capscrews. Tighten the capscrews to 66N.m (49 lbfft).10. Install and tighten the drain plug. Fill the differentialhousing with SAE 90 EP gear oil through the fill hole.Install the plug. Remove the air from the brake systemas described inTHE BRAKE SYSTEM, 1800 SRM540.11. Install the mast as described in the section forTHEMAST, 4000 SRM 521.WARNINGThe axle housing is heavy. A lifting device must beused to move the axle housing2. Put sealant on the mounting surface of the axle hous-ing. Use the jack described in step (9) in the REMOVALAND DISASSEMBLY section in this manual to installthe axle housing on the transmission and frame. Tightenthe capscrews that attach the transmission to the axlehousing. Attach the mounting caps and tighten themounting hardware to 72 N.m (53 lbfft).3. Install new grease seals in the hub. Install the outerseal with the lip toward the outer bearing. Install the in-ner bearing and seal. Put wheel bearing grease in thebearing that is between the seals.4. Install the hub/brake drum assembly on the axle hous-ing.5. Install the outer bearing cone on the axle housing.Install the washer and lockplate. Install the nut. Tightenthe nut to 205 N.m (150 lbfft) while rotating the hub.Loosen the nut until the hub turns freely. The torquemust be less than 25 N.m (20 lbfft). Tighten the nut to 35N.m (25 lbfft) or until the first alignment position after35 N.m (25 lbfft). Bend the lockplate over the nut. SeeFIGURE 2. and FIGURE 3.6.
