The transfer case hasa ratio of 1:l.DESCRIPTION (See FIGURE 1.)The speed reducers and the transfer case are the sameunit except for the gear sizes. A speed reducer or trans-fer case has a housing, a drive gear, a driven gear andan input shaft. Remove the drain plug in the housing of the speedreducer or transfer case. Drain the oil from the housing.3. Disconnect and remove the drive shaft.4. Remove the cover from the housing.5. Remove the nut from the pinion shaft. Remove thedriven gear from the shaft.16. Remove the nuts holding the housing to the differen-tial. Remove the tapered sleeves from the studs.7. Remove the housing from the differential.4. After adjustments, install the bearing retainer. Installthe seal for the input shaft.5. Use a gasket sealant and install the gasket (hypoidaxles only) and housing on the differential. Install thetapered sleeves, washers (hypoid axles only) and nuts.Tighten the nuts as follows:a. Hypoid drive axle: 136 to 149 N.m (100 to 110foot pounds).b. Planetary gear axle: 75 foot pounds (102 N.m).DISASSEMBLY (See FIGURE 1.)1. Remove the bearing retainer from the housing.2. Push the shaft for the drive gear from the housing.Remove the bearing cups and cones.CLEANINGClean the parts in solvent. Dry the parts with com-pressed air.6. Install the driven gear as follows:a. Hypoid drive axle: Make sure the long side of thehub is toward the cover. Install the spacer. Tight-en the nut to 1220 to 1627 N.m (900 to 1200 footpounds).b. Planetary gear axle: Make sure the side of the hubwith the chamfer is toward the cover. Install thenut and tighten it to 949 to 1220 N.m (700 to 900foot pounds).7. Install the gasket and the cover. Install the driveshaft.8. The supply of oil for the speed reducer or transfercase is common with the drive axle. Check the level ofthe oil. Add gear lubricant SAE 85W–140 as necessary.ASSEMBLY AND INSTALLATION (SeeFIGURE 1.)1. Install the bearing cup in the housing. Install thebearing cone in the bearing cup. Install the shaft for thedrive gear through the drive gear and the bearing.2. Install the bearing cone on the shaft. Install the bear-ing cup in the housing.3. Use shims between the bearing retainer and the bear-ing cup to adjust the preload on the bearings. The pre-load mut be 0.03mm (0.001 inch) tight to 0.05mm(0.002 inch) loose.TROUBLESHOOTINGPROBLEMThe lift truck will not move.The speed reducer or transfer casemakes noise.CAUSEThe gear(s) or shaft is damaged.There is not enough oil in the housing.The bearings are worn or damaged.The gear(s) or shaft is damaged or loose.The speed reducer or transfer case hasleakage.The seal for the input shaft is damaged.There is a leak between the differential and the housing.2
